Why I don't like school

Updated: Mar 16

This is by no means a disrespect to all the teachers who work hard to educate the youth but rather a criticism of how the education system operates in North America. The school system that I have experienced is becoming dated in a fast-moving world of information and ideas. Of course, there are reasons you should still stay in school, but I will talk about that another day.

Teaches Rigidity/Never Teaches to Question Things

School is supposed to teach you about concepts such as math, English, and physics. "Supposed to." What ends up happening is you never actually learn deeply; you just consume information only to regurgitate it for a test. This process is a waste of time and money for both students and teachers who might not even be interested in the subject. The rigidity of the curriculum leaves little room for creative and critical thinking, which makes lectures so unbearable.

Sometimes, when you are in a class, you just think, "When am I ever going to apply this in real life?" The focus on rote learning and standardized testing means you never get to challenge and explore what is being taught. The pressure to prepare for exams and achieve good grades stifles curiosity and discourages questioning. The system prioritizes memorization over understanding, leaving students ill-prepared to apply their knowledge in real-world situations.

Elitism

Success in our society is often measured by academic achievements and college degrees. This obsession marginalizes those without formal education, even if they possess the knowledge and experience to perform a job competently. This mindset undervalues practical skills and real-world experience, perpetuating the myth that success is only attainable through traditional educational pathways. It creates a narrow definition of success that does not reflect the diverse talents and capabilities of individuals.

Expensive and Inconsistent Quality

The cost of higher education, especially universities, is exorbitant. Students may pay tens of thousands of dollars to obtain degrees, only to be taught by professors who are more interested in research than teaching. The quality of education can vary significantly, with students often getting the short end of the stick. The financial burden leaves many in debt, questioning the value of their education in an unpredictable job market. The return on investment for a degree is increasingly uncertain, making the high cost a risky gamble for many.

What I Use to Learn

In a world where the internet gives us access to libraries of information, there are numerous alternatives to traditional education that can provide valuable learning experiences. Here are some resources that I find effective:

EDX

EDX offers online courses from top universities and institutions worldwide. Many of these courses are free, with the option to pay for a verified certificate. EDX covers a broad spectrum of subjects, from computer science to business management, providing learners with flexible and affordable educational opportunities.X has a variety of courses that you can learn from there from all across the world inclusive of Harvard and MIT and what did added addition is that you can actually get a certificate with them and therefore you can get something more out of it obviously it costs money but I do think it can be worth it to get that sort of validity rather than going to a random course online and then just no one or like your employer doesn't really receive value in it If you're trying to get an education as well as get a certificate I would recommend starting here as it's the best value.

MIT or Harvard Courses

Why learn anywhere else when you can take the course material for free and teach it yourself? These prestigious institutions offer free online courses through platforms like MIT OpenCourseWare and Harvard Online Learning. These courses cover a wide range of subjects and provide high-quality education without the hefty price tag.

Khan Academy

A time-tested set of classes that provide all the materials needed to help you grow and learn. Khan Academy offers free courses on various subjects, from basic arithmetic to advanced calculus, along with interactive exercises and instructional videos. It is an excellent resource for self-paced learning. The whole program/courses are all donation run which means that with the support of people like us we can continue to give quality material and education for free

Google Courses

Google offers a range of free and paid courses through platforms like Google Digital Garage and Coursera. These courses cover skills in high demand, such as digital marketing, data analysis, and programming. Google’s certifications are recognized by employers, making them a valuable addition to your resume. This is also another alternative to edx where you can get a certificate and be validated for the work and you put into it because many employers will recognize this as something that you can use

Youtube

A lot of universities may be downplay this but YouTube actually is such a good source now these days with a lot of professors and Educators now trying to push for their content and material to reach students and and Young Learners alike. I think what's also great now is that people are also even recognizing it as Replacements or university courses some courses I've taken even in the past have just used YouTube videos from from years ago and just take it as their own so again another punch in the face for YouTube university courses because why I pay so much money for you to watch YouTube videos right.

Masterclass

A bit more of a supplementary course but I think masterclass also has some good value as well you can learn from some of the top leaders in the world like Ramsey who knows a lot about cooking for example or Neil deGrasse Tyson if you want to learn about math and physics although they do give a high order learning that I think the sort of thinking helps with people so that they can understand the material better rather than reading through a textbook doing all the Practical questions and not really thinking what all of this really means because in order to actually do the nitty-gritty you have to know the concepts and learning the concepts are taught well from these.
